Artist Bio
Loes Roos is a Nature and Scientific Illustrator whose work shares a close up of our world and the intricate connections between all living things, including ourselves. She has lived and worked and made art in Europe, Africa and Central America. Loes currently lives in Panama with her husband on 8 hectare of reforested land. The process of reforestation provides inspiration for her art.
Loes was interested in art and nature from a young age. At age eleven she had an herbarium and in high school she made portraits of her friends. She studied biology, but also joined a local arts school to learn techniques and meet like-minded people. She continues to invest and improve skills, especially since 2019, when she joined illustration communities on-line. Since 2023 she is learning digital art techniques, even though she still prefers to work in graphite, pen and ink, colour pencils and water colours.
Loes´ professional career in art started in 1992 with illustrations for magazines and a book about sustainable agriculture in Zimbabwe. She was then asked to make pen and ink portraits and illustrations for a book by and about the Tonga People in Zimbabwe in 1994. This book was republished in 2023 by the Tonga Literacy Fund and she participated in the making of a short documentary about the impact of that book. The documentary features her drawings of the Tonga people and Tonga Culture. From 2015 to 2020, Loes produced a poster of the Coiba reef fishes and completed various commisions to paint birds and flowers. Loes was accepted an aspiring member of the Dutch Botanical Artist Society in 2021 and has since participated in joint exhibitions (currently in the Dutch museum for tree cultivation in Boskoop -until 16 February 2025). In 2022 she also illustrated a children´s book for a Panamanian NGO about Reforestation in Panama ¨Una calle de arboles, un corredor de vida¨.
